”When I was….when I was in high school, I remember I never did good in school (cheers)….and it used to ….if you didn’t do good in school, they used to….you know, they (?) because you’re stupid and you’re dumb or you don’t care and…..for some reason I used to sit in class and I was just….I just could never….they were never able to get my attention or to make….they were never able to….make me believe that what they were trying to show me was something that mattered, you know, that was important (cheers)….you know….and the worst…..and the worst part about it was that a lot of it, a lot of it was stuff that mattered and stuff….and stuff that….that I would’ve wanted to know, you know, it´s like (cheers) ….(?) for some reason (?) they didn’t know how to….they didn’t know how to get….get past your head, they didn’t know how to talk to your heart…..and (cheers)….you know, and…..I used to wonder, sometimes I wonder that…..that you know, if I ever have a kid or something….and I come up to him and then I have like…..some Drifters’ record, like ‘Under the Boardwalk’…..and (chuckles)(cheers)…..it´d be the saddest thing in the world….that if I couldn’t show him….the beauty in that record, if I couldn’t show him how, how this record mattered….and how it….and how it….it didn’t matter just to me but….how it (?)….how it would matter to him and it could matter to his kid too someday and (cheers)….when I think about all them writers that wrote all those great books….and how now….when they try to teach ‘em in school…you know, they make them sound so dull and they make them sound so boring and stuff (cheers)….I’d feel bad if that ever happened to the Drifters (chuckles) ….but….I guess the thing was when I first started to listen to the radio that was the first time….I turned…. tuned into New York station, it was WMCA, it was a Top 40 station in New York (cheers)….and….boy….I used to have that radio….stuck under my pillow….little transistor….and it was the only thing, the only thing in my whole life that ever….that ever made me feel that…that, that for some reason…..that life was worth living, (?) showed me the….good things that….that were out there…..and I remember my old man used to think it was all noise, you know, and….and he used to….and later on, I used to feel so bad that he missed it…..that he, that he didn’t get it, that he couldn’t hear it (cheers)….and I just wanted to be sure that I was never gonna miss it…..you know…..so….because a lotta people, a lotta people, they miss it…a whole lotta people do…..and there’s no reason, there’s no reason, there’s no reason why…..”
