‘‘When I was 18, I was living up there on Cookman Avenue…..over top of a drugstore ….and me and my little band used to play (?) middle of town at a place called Upstage ….used to be open from 8 o’clock till 5 a.m…..and me and Mad Dog Lopez, Garry Tallent and Danny Federici….we used to play there all night long….go home…..tape up the windows, sleep all day, come back and play all night….and I used to walk up and down this boardwalk in the day….had myself on the budget….had two dollars I could spend on pinball….a buck and a half for hot dogs and french fries….and two bucks for miscellaneous….and uh….went up to New York City, met John Hammond, got a record deal….(?)….I used to really (?), man, as long as I was playing anyplace…..didn’t matter if I was at Madison Square Garden….or some little club in Seaside Heights…. I’d be happy, I’d been just as happy….you know, if I’d never made a bunch of records and….had a chance to play around the country, I’d’ve still been just as happy playing my guitar….then as I got older I realised….that that was bullshit…..”
