(crowd cheers)…if you grew up on the Jersey Shore playing the bars and the…coffee houses and the drive-ins and the supermarkets and the teen clubs and the VFWs and the American Legion Halls and the high school dances, you had to play soul music!…soul music is at the heart of the E Street Band, we are a rock and soul group…soul music was about the everyday things: work, love, sex…struggle, blood, tears, sweat, the earth…and it was about appreciating the beautiful things…right in front you…this is a song by one of the most elegant soul music songwriters…and we’re gonna dedicate it to all the beautiful German girls out there tonight (crowd cheers) in the stands…here we go…”

“I was…finishing the “Wrecking Ball”-album…and I was looking for an ending…and I realized there wasn’t really gonna be an ending on that recording…there were no happy endings to be found…and I realized that I needed a song that was a ghost story…a song where the voices of the dead talk to and inform the voices of the living… and that goes on generation after generation…and as people struggle on…there’s voices all around us talking to us about their sacrifices…so this is a ghost story…imagine it’s late at night…and you’re wandering through the graveyard…and you’re listening… listening…listening…to see what you can hear…”
