“As I was…coming towards the end of writing for the “Wrecking Ball”-album, I was looking for an ending…something that would tie up the story I was trying to tell…I kept working and working and I couldn’t come up with anything…and I realized that the record did not need an end…and so I wrote a ghost story about how the voices of the dead inform the voices of the living…how the deeds of the dead shape the present and move us into the future and how no good act is ever wasted…so…imagine it’s late at night and you’re walking through the graveyard…looking for something…and you’re listening…and you’re listening…and you’re listening…”

Intro to “96 Tears”
“Thank you, Pink Pop! (crowd cheers) alright, alright (crowd cheers) no, we’re not done yet, we’re not done yet (crowd cheers) I’m gonna bring out a friend of mine, uh, back in New York City we were signed to our first record I think somewhere around the same time, a great New York City songwriter, a great friend of mine for many, many, many years, Garland Jeffries – Garland! (crowd cheers) alright, Garland had a hit with this cover, I think it was a hit here (chuckles) there he is (crowd cheers) yeah!…we went to the same old-school (Garland: “That’s it, baby”)(chuckles) alright, we haven’t practiced this one but if anybody in the E Street Band fucks it up, they gotta hand in their card at the end of this damn thing (Garland: “I agree, I agree!”)(chuckles) alright, I’m gonna count it off and then you guys hit the chords, turn those, turn those cheap organs up, alright – here we go, one, two, three…”
