Intro to "Independence Day"
Fathers and sons, fathers and sons, fathers and sons … Independence Day was … the first song that I wrote about fathers and sons … It's the kind of song you write when you're young … and you're first startled by … your parents' humanity … You're shocked to realize that … they had their own dreams and their own desires … and their own hopes … that maybe didn't pan out … as perfectly as they might have wished. And uh … but all you can see … are the adult compromises that they had to make … The daily lives that they feel … that seem that they're locked into … and the world that it seems that they can't escape … And when you're young, that's .. all those limits … all those boundaries … you … you can't see the blessings that might come with them … And all you can feel is a desire to .. to get away … So uh … I had a simple setting for this song … It was a late night conversation around the kitchen table … between two people … struggling to understand one another.
Intro to "Badlands"
We uh … got some friends in the house from the Community Food Bank of New Jersey … For 30 years, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey has been helping hungry families here in New Jersey by providing food, job training and hope … for folks that are struggling out there … Thousands of volunteers each year lend a hand … some of whom are in this arena tonight … If you get a chance, help out the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, they're in the house with us tonight … Alright, band! … One, two!
