Teatro Augusteo, Naples, Italy

The Teatro Augusteo is a theater complex in Naples. It was built between 1926 and 1929 , on a project by architect Arnaldo Foschini and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi , assisted by engineer Gioacchino Luigi Mellucci , in its namesake square created a few years earlier to create an outlet for the traffic of the newborn Central funicular, which connects the Vomero to via Toledo. The theater replaces a pre-existing one realized by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1772 in what was once the Berio palace . This theater, which could accommodate up to 1600 spectators, was located inside the noble palace (whose facade was built by the great architect), which was then partly demolished to make room for the new square. During the Second World War the theater was closed and, at the reopening in the fifties, they were made of ungenerous restorations that twisted the appearance and the exceptional acoustics. For many years it was used as a cinema, in 1992 a profound work of architectural recovery started and the theater was returned to the city in its original appearance.
